Launch of the Press Freedom Police Codex

Across the globe, the relationship between journalists and the police has been a difficult one. Research has revealed that journalists blame the police, the police blame journalists, and the cycle continues.

We, at the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF) believe that a critical dialogue is needed in this area. That is why ECPMF has teamed up with the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), Index on Censorship, Osservatorio Balcani e Caucaso Transeuropa (OBCT), Ossigeno per I’informazione, and the South East Europe Media Organisation (SEEMO) – to launch the Press Freedom Police Codex.

With this we aim to start, maintain and even build good practice guidelines. For the discussion and dialogue, the European Confederation of Police (EuroCOP) will join us. Such a dialogue that involves parties from the different sides, we believe, is necessary for the de-escalation of tensions between the police and journalists and for building mutual respect.
