Media Foundation of Sparkasse Leipzig

In 2015 the Media Foundation of Sparkasse Leipzig and a consortium of international partners was awarded a grant from the European Commission in order to establish the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom. Additional major financial supporters of the project are the City of Leipzig, the State of Saxony, the German Foreign Ministry and the foundation itself. In order to establish the Centre in 2015/16 the ECPMF has been working in close collaboration with the following partners:

International Press Institute (IPI)

IPI is the world’s oldest global press freedom organisation. It was established in 1950 at Columbia University in New York by 34 editors from 15 countries for the sake of a professional ideal: that the cause of journalism, in particular a free press, was of vital importance in improving understanding between nations, a prerequisite for the construction of peace in the aftermath of the second world war. IPI has monitored and advocated in support of press freedom and freedom of expression across the globe ever since. The organisation’s core mission – to find solutions to the challenges that journalists encounter in bringing the news to the public – rests on the following pillars:

  • The protection of freedom of opinion and expression,
  • The furtherance and safeguard of press freedom,
  • The promotion of the free flow of news and information,
  • The improvement the practices of journalism, and
  • The achievement of understanding among journalists and so among peoples.

Index on Censorship

Index on Censorship is an international human rights organisation that promotes and defends the fundamental right to freedom of expression and campaigns against censorship.

Index’s covers political, social and economic censorship, media freedom and plurality, and artistic and cultural freedom. It combines international journalism with policy expertise, advocacy and campaigning, the promotion of debate at curated events offline and online, and targeted capacity building. This hybrid combination of a media organisation, a policy and events think tank, and an advocacy and campaigning NGO, gives uniqueness, agility, creativity and strength.

South East Europe Media Organisation (SEEMO)

is operating since 2000 as a regional non-governmental, non-profit network of editors, media executives and leading journalists in 35 countries in South East and Central Europe, based in Vienna (Austria) and with offices in the SEEMO region. SEEMO has over 2500 individual members.
